The Peace Labyrinth was the first step for WEWC in using public art for community building and action in Chickasaw neighborhood.
When the Peace Labyrinth emerged, it was adorned with 450 bricks painted by community members stands as a testament of to restoration, tranquility, and rejuvenation.

The Story Behind the JCPS Lot
John and Minerva Young were married on January 7, 1902, in Springfield, Kentucky and relocated to louisville in 1935. In 1940, they became the proud owners of 3833 Hale Avenue, purchasing it from William A. Kannally, the proprietor of Camp Knox Lumber Company. The Youngs expanded their home with an extension in 1946, enhancing its size and functionality. After their deaths, Minerva’s in 1956, followed by John in 1962, the property remained untouched until it was eventually transferred to the city land bank in 1995. Subsequently, in 1997, it came under the ownership of the Jefferson County Board of Education.
As the board of education proceeds with the auctioning of the land on July 29th, 2023, the outcome of the auction will mark a pivotal moment in the history of 40th and Hale. Throughout this process, WEWC has demonstrated their unwavering dedication by diligently maintaining the property, undertaking tasks such as the removal of dead trees and the upkeep of the lawn.
Despite our persistent efforts over the past nine years, the school board has consistently declined to sell the property to WEWC. We hope to emerge as the successful bidder and continue our mission of promoting community wellness within this
